Carlow University seeks an innovative leader for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Carlow University is a comprehensive, women-centered Catholic University located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1929 by the Sisters of Mercy, Carlow is situated in a culturally diverse urban setting neighboring Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Duquesne University. With an enrollment of 2,200 graduate and undergraduate students, Carlow is known for its academic excellence, dedication to individual attention, and a commitment to the liberal arts tradition and career development. The College houses the Division of Humanities, the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the School for Social Change. Thirty-four undergraduate majors'including dual degree programs with Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne University, and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh - 12 master's degree programs, and two doctorates are offered through the University's two undergraduate colleges and the graduate school. One of the 16 member institutions of the Conference for Mercy Higher Education, Carlow is recognized for educating traditional students and adult learners for a lifetime of leadership and service. The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences is the chief academic and administrative head of the college and reports directly to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean is expected to advance the mission of Carlow University and will lead the Faculty in planning for student success; engage in collaborative academic strategic planning to maintain and enhance the quality of the College's academic programs; promote the development of new academic initiatives; foster the professional development of faculty; and work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and external constituencies. The position requires an innovative, dynamic, and imaginative leader strongly committed to the teaching/learning process, the highest standards of scholarly achievement, and the welfare of students, faculty, and staff. Candidates are expected to promote an environment that stimulates academic excellence and supports student learning both in and outside the classroom; oversee program development and evaluation including assessment of student learning, curriculum revision, and regular program review; oversee the hiring, development, and evaluation of full- and part-time faculty within the College; manage the academic budget for the College; and cultivate and maintain relationships with other schools and departments within the University as well as educational institutions, agencies, or business organizations in the region. The successful candidate will possess the following attributes: (1) a terminal degree in one of the College's disciplines with qualifications suitable for tenure at a senior rank in one of its departments; (2) administrative experience in higher education equivalent to the level of department chair or higher; (3) demonstrated commitment to serving a diverse community, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is valued and respected, and working effectively within an environment that values shared governance; (4) demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, administration, department chairs, staff, other campus personnel, and external constituencies; (5) excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills; (6) experience in assessment of student learning outcomes and the ability to contribute to the achievement of institutional goals and objectives; (7) excellent advocacy, budgeting, resource management, and planning skills; and (8) a commitment to the values of liberal education and to the mission and Catholic identity of the University. This is a full-time benefits eligible position. Candidates will be subject to a criminal history check before a written offer will be made. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Consideration of candidates will begin on February 15, 2010. The search will remain open until the position is filled. The new Dean is expected to take office on or about July 1, 2010.
